Flooring – Tiles v’s Wood – The Pro’s and Con’s

When it comes to flooring there is an abundance of options, usually it boils down to two main contenders, tiles or wood. In this post we discuss the pro’s and con’s of both options and offer a solution that might just give you the best of both!

Wood flooring

Wood flooring has become increasingly popular over the last decade, with more and more people opting to have it throughout their home, but is it the best option for you?

Wood Floor

Pro’s

Affordable
You can pick up a wood floor from B&Q for very little money nowadays, however be aware that the cheaper you go the higher potential for poor quality.

Available in lots of colours, grades and sizes.
This is great as it enables you to create exactly the look you are after.

Easy to maintain
Most wood floors need very little maintenance and up-keep, making it great for busy family life.

Con’s

Can dent and mark
If you like to wear stiletto heels or have pets, then wood floors might not be right for you as typically the wood will dent and mark over time.

Will need work over time
Overtime your wood floor will need some work as the natural finish begins to wear, this can be timely and adds to the expense.

Susceptible to water damage
Be careful if you spill anything on your wood floor, they can be very susceptible to water damage, meaning if you don’t clean up that spill straight away the floor could be damaged permanently.

Tiles
are a very traditional flooring option and offer a great range of styles and designs to suit all tastes, here are the pro’s and con’s.Tile flooring

Tiled flooring

Pro’s

Wide range of styles
The sky is quite literally the limit when it comes to tiles, with a full range of colours and sizes you are bound to find the right one for your home.

Affordable
Tiles don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. You can pick up great quality tiles for really reasonable prices.

Hard wearing and low maintenance
Tiles last for years and years, with most tiles offering no maintenance at all. Some tiles such as flagstone and sandstone may need re-lacquering every 5-10 years.

Con’s

– Can be cold under foot
Tiles can be cold underfoot, however most new homes now have underfloor heating meaning the tiles are toasty warm!

– Harder to lay
Tiling a floor can be tricky to lay if you haven’t done it before, however help is always at hand.

– Bumps hurt slightly more
If you have little ones then the tumbles they have might hurt slightly more on tiles than on wood, but this is nothing a few strategically placed rugs can’t sort!
Yup this is one decision you don’t have to compromise on, there really is a best of both option, wood effect tiles!

The best of both

Wood effect tiles

Turn your hallway into a showstopper with beautiful tiles.

Hallways are often a room that get completely forgotten about, they are a space for coats, muddy boots and the occasional bike! But this is the space that welcomes you, your family and your guests into your home and should be a showstopper. Now, obviously we’re not suggesting you go and hang a crystal chandelier and paint the walls gold, but in this post we’re going to show you how the use of beautiful tiles can transform your hallway.

Patterned v’s Neutral.

Now much of this decision will depend on your own taste, however, another key decider should be the durability and maintenance of the tile, some tiles such as natural stone will need to be resealed periodically for example. If this is not up your street then ceramic tiles can make an easy clean alternative, talk to an expert to discuss the best option for you.

Patterned tiles are a great way to make a statement, and because you don’t spend a huge amount of time in your hallway you can afford to be bold without the worry of the space feeling small or overbearing. However, there is a balance to be made between pattern and colour, for example the picture below shows a beautiful design made using just two colours, the Victorian style design is classic and elegant and the tile used is durable and hard wearing.

The other way to add pattern to your hallway is to use a patterned tile (rather than creating the pattern with the tile.) With patterned tiles you can be really bold, using a geometric design, for example, can give a sense of space if your hallway is particularly small, or give your hall an uber modern feel. We love the bold design of the tile in the picture below and how it makes this hallway look longer.

Neutral tiles are a classic way to give your hallway a bit of grandeur, using large square tiles can give the feeling of extra space. Sandstone and flagstone floors as an example, are also very hard wearing and easy to clean, the colours of these stones are also stunning and in addition to their wonderful natural texture.

Another great thing about natural tiles in the hallway is they can easily be carried on throughout the rest of the house, many people choose to have the same flooring in their hallway and their kitchen to give a real sense of continuity and flow to the home.

No matter the house, no matter the size, your hallway is a space that should be given the wow factor, a space that really sets the tone for the rest of your home. Give it the face-lift is deserves with some beautiful tiles! How to make a small bathroom feel bigger.

Following on from our last blog post ‘Transform Your Bathroom with these Tiling Tips’ we have put together this post to help you make the most of your small bathroom.

Traditionally, bathrooms are not huge rooms and with open living spaces becoming more and more popular we’ve seen a definite decrease in bathroom sizes. However, just because your bathroom is petite doesn’t mean you can’t make it feel large and luxurious!

The first way to make your bathroom feel more spacious is to use light colours. Darker colours absorb light and make rooms feel smaller and cosy and are great in big spaces or as feature walls throughout the home, however in a small bathroom can feel oppressive.

Small Bathroom White

The bathroom pictured uses natural light to illuminate the space and make this small room feel big, bright and clean.

Another way to make your bathroom feel larger than it actually is, is to use a reflective surface. Now we’re not suggesting you should mirror every wall! But using a shiny, metallic look tile will really help to bounce light around your bathroom and make it feel expensive and expansive!

Small Bathroom Reflected

We love the twinkle of these mosaic tiles in this compact bathroom, not only does the light sparkle around the room but it adds a bit of luxury to this tight space.

Our final tip for making your bathroom feel bigger is to use large tiles, large tiles will divide the walls and floors less often giving the feeling of space.

Small Bathroom large tiles

The bathroom pictured uses a large square tile which gives this room a really clean and modern feel. We also love the grey tiles against the white fixtures, it really lightens the space and draws your eye in.

No matter what the size of your bathroom, don’t overlook it as a boring space, make the most of it and be creative. Here at The Tile Warehouse we have a huge range of floor and wall tiles to suite all sizes and tastes, come and visit us at our Maldon showroom, or why not take advantage of our ‘Home Selection Service’ where we bring the tile to you! Talk to one of our tile specialists here for more information.

Transform your bathroom with these tiling tips

Did you know that over the course of your life you’re likely to spend around 92 days of it in a bathroom?

That’s a long old time to be spending in any space, let alone one that you don’t like the look of! In this blog post we have put together some bathroom tile transformation tips to help turn your space into somewhere that you want to spend 92 days in!

1. Choose a tile that is timeless

You don’t want to be constantly updating your bathroom every time a new style comes around, so pick a tile that you can style around. For example, a white brick style tile works beautifully in almost all bathrooms and will never go out of style.

White Bathroom

The other great thing about a white tile is that you can add colour with fixtures, fittings and soft furnishings that are easier to switch out should you want to have a change in the future.

2. Spice things up with some colour

Using colour is a great way to breathe new life into your bathroom, however, a word of advice, use it sparingly. Too much colour can make your bathroom feel small and using colours that are ‘in style’ now might not be in the future (think about the avocado phase!)

Here is an example of how colour works brilliantly as an ‘all over’ style:

Blue Bathroom

The other way to use colour in a bathroom, particularly if you have a small room is the feature wall. The feature wall is where you use colour on only one wall in the room and works perfectly in almost every bathroom. It’s a fantastic way to draw the eye through a room and can create the illusion of more space.

Yellow Bathroom

3. Size of the tile

There are so many different sizes of tiles to choose from, which can cause a few headaches when coming to pick the right one for your bathroom. We have a very simple rule to help you; The size of tile is directly related to the size of your room, seriously it’s that simple. If you have a small bathroom then using smaller tiles such as a mosaic style will work perfectly, see exhibit A:

Mosaic Bathroom

If you have a large bathroom, then you can afford to go for bigger tiles like this:

Large Bathroom

No matter what the size of your bathroom there are lots of ways that you can spruce it up. The Tile Warehouse have a showroom packed full of tiles to suit all tastes and spaces, so pop in and one of our experts will be happy to help. You might also want to take advantage of our Home Selection Service where we bring the tiles to you, so that you can see exactly what they look like in your home! Contact us today to find out more.

Modern

This kitchen has taken sleek to a whole new level! The grey pallet really gives this space a contemporary feel, using oblong wall tiles also helps to give this kitchen the feeling of width. The glossy floor tiles reflect the natural light and make this space feel clean and fresh.

Get the look:

Wall tiles: 100 x 300 grey glazed porcelain.

Floor tiles: 600 x 600 sand coloured, glazed polished porcelain.

Farmhouse

The farmhouse kitchen is a timeless classic, this is one of our favourite examples of this style. Where this kitchen excels is in bringing everything together, the wall tiles bring out the stunning wood worktops, which in turn showcases the glossy wood effect floor tiles. The use of the warm browns and wood textures make this kitchen feel warm and homely.

Get the look:

Wall tiles: 200 x 100 mixed coloured ceramic.

Floor tiles: Wood effect glazed porcelain tile.

Colour

Colour tiles

Using colour in a kitchen can really give your space the ‘Wow’ factor, however there is a balance to strike. For example, using too much colour can make your kitchen feel smaller than it actually is. The kitchen pictured hits the perfect balance between colour, pattern and contemporary without making the space feel small, in fact the use of the pattern design makes the room feel larger and the blue tile is highlighted by the surrounding greys, whites and silvers tying the whole style together.

Get the look:

Wall tiles: 100 x 100 glazed ceramic tiles, available in many colours.

Many of the tiles showcased in this post are available to see in our Maldon showroom, alternatively why not arrange a Home Selection where one of our tile experts bring the tiles to you! Contact us today to find out more.
